Although I did trap starlings both years at the site (using stand-alone nest box traps), I made the round-holed compartments in the T-14's shallow in order to discourage starlings from attempting to nest in them, because I could not be at the site every day. I made the compartments shallow by adding a false back wall to the slide-in nest tray. In 2002, I made the round-holed compartments 7" deep, and starlings tried to nest in them.  In 2003, I made the round entrance hole compartments 5" deep, and starlings did not attempt to nest in them, although Purple Martins did nest in them. When the fledglings in the round entrance hole compartments were about ten days old, I removed the artificial back of the compartments, making them 11" deep, just like the excluder entrance hole compartments.
